How OnlyFans works, from a fan’s side of the screen
What happens between signing up and seeing a creator’s feed: accounts, subscriptions, locked posts, messages and who gets the money, explained for subscribers.

OnlyFans looks like a social network, and in many ways it is one: there are profiles, a feed, likes and comments. The difference is that the people posting are paid directly by the people watching. Once you understand which part of the site costs money and which does not, it becomes a lot less confusing. This guide walks through it in the order you meet it as a new fan.
Step one: the account itself
Creating a fan account costs nothing. You need an email address, a password and a username, and you can browse with that alone. Depending on the country you are in, OnlyFans may also ask you to confirm you are an adult before it shows explicit material, for example with a quick selfie-based age estimate or an ID check run by a verification provider.
A payment card is only needed when you decide to pay for something. You can add it later, and you can remove it again at any time from the payment settings.
Step two: following a creator
Everything on OnlyFans is organised around individual creators. Each one decides how their page works:
| Page type | What you pay | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Free page | Nothing to follow | Teaser posts on the wall; full sets usually sold in messages |
| Paid page | A monthly price set by the creator | The wall unlocks for 30 days; extras can still cost money |
| Paid page with a bundle | Several months paid upfront at a discount | Same as above, cheaper per month |
In this directory, 65% of creators run a free page and the rest charge a subscription. Paid pages range from $4.99 to $50.00 a month, with a typical price around $10.00.
A subscription renews every month by default. Next to the subscribe button on each page there is an auto-renew switch; turning it off means you keep access until the end of the period you have paid for and are not charged again.
Step three: what is behind the wall
Subscribing opens the creator’s feed, the "wall". What you then see depends on how the creator runs things. Some put everything on the wall and charge for nothing else. Others post previews on the wall and sell the full photo sets or videos separately. Neither approach is a trick, but it matters for your budget, and our notes on each creator page say which style a creator uses when they make it clear on their profile.
Paid extras come in a few shapes:
- Locked posts. A post on the wall with its own price. You see a blurred preview and an unlock button.
- Pay-per-view messages. The same idea, sent to your inbox. Free pages rely on these heavily.
- Tips. An amount you choose, sent on a post, in chat or from the profile.
- Custom requests. Content made for you, priced and agreed with the creator in messages.
Nothing charges you silently. Every locked item shows a price on the button, and nothing is bought until you confirm it.
Step four: messages
Direct messages are where much of OnlyFans actually happens. Creators send welcome messages, offers and locked content there, and fans ask for customs or simply chat. Some creators reply personally, some use a team, and some charge for replies. Our guide to messaging creators covers what to expect.
Where your money goes
OnlyFans takes 20% of every payment: subscriptions, tips, locked posts and messages alike. The creator receives the other 80%. Taxes such as VAT are added on top at checkout depending on where you live, so the amount on your statement can be a little higher than the price on the button.
| You pay | Creator receives | OnlyFans keeps |
|---|---|---|
| $10.00 subscription | $8.00 | $2.00 |
| $25.00 locked video | $20.00 | $5.00 |
| $5.00 tip | $4.00 | $1.00 |
Who the creators are
Every creator has to verify their identity and age with OnlyFans before they can earn. Beyond that, the platform is wide open: solo creators, couples, cosplayers, fitness accounts and people who only chat. The categories in this directory group pages by what they actually post, which is the quickest way to find a style you like without subscribing blind.
A sensible way to start
- Make an account and look around a few free pages first; they cost nothing and show you how creators use the wall and messages.
- Pick one paid page whose price and archive size make sense to you. The photo and video counts on each creator page here help.
- Switch auto-renew off straight after subscribing if you only want to try one month.
- Decide on a monthly limit for extras before you open your inbox, not after.
Questions people ask
Is OnlyFans free to join?
Yes. The account is free, and so are free pages. You only pay for subscriptions to paid pages and for any extras you choose to unlock.
Do creators see my real name?
No. Creators see your username and display name. Your card details and billing name stay with the payment processor. More in our privacy guide.
What happens when a subscription ends?
You lose access to the creator’s wall. Anything you bought separately, such as unlocked messages, normally stays available in your chat history as long as the creator does not delete it.
Can I follow as many creators as I like?
Yes. There is no limit, and each subscription is billed separately.
